The Campus Community Pays Tribute to the Late William Eric Armstrong

For Release Upon Receipt - Tuesday, September 25, 2018

Eric Armstrong-9-25-2018.jpgIt is with deep regret that The UWI, Cave Hill campus has learnt of the passing of William Eric Armstrong.

Best known as ‘Eric’, he served in various capacities at The UWI, starting in 1964 as a lecturer in economics at Cave Hill, deputy director of the Institute of Social and Economic Research (Eastern Caribbean) – now the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) – from 1968-1970, and a short stint as deputy director of the Planning Unit. Armstrong also worked at several regional and international bodies, including the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the Caribbean Development Bank and the World Bank.

In 2010, the economist wrote a book titled A History of Money and Banking in Barbados, which documents the development of money and commercial banking in Barbados from 1627 to the establishment of the Central Bank of Barbados in 1973. It was published by The University of the West Indies Press.

In paying tribute on behalf of SALISES, Director Dr. Don Marshall said that Armstrong made a “sterling” contribution to public service in Barbados and beyond. The full tribute can be read here.

The funeral is scheduled for Thursday, 27th September, 2018 at 10.00am at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens.

No flowers will be allowed by special request.
